***Company Profile Of The Week***
Want to know more about the companies in our industry?
In this space we feature a different company profile each week...
This week's profile:
Insect Lore
Insect Lore - Back in 1964, STEM education featured children studying arithmetic, relying heavily on textbooks, and only dreaming of computers housed in glass-enclosed climate-controlled rooms. In this academic atmosphere, a California entomologist named Carlos White was thinking about taking STEM learning a step further. Wouldn't it be wonderful if children could see the miraculous metamorphosis of butterflies up close? With this question in mind, and after years of experimentation, Carlos and his wife Pat created the ingenious Butterflies-By-Mail concept. Insect Lore was born in 1969 and Painted Lady caterpillars and their food were shipped across the USA, enabling children to observe the fascinating butterfly life cycle up close in their own homes and classrooms. Fifty years later, this hands-on science experiment of observing Painted Lady caterpillars eat, change into chrysalides, and finally emerge as adult butterflies continues to enchant even the most tech savvy children.

In 1975, as the Butterflies-By-Mail concept grew in popularity, People Magazine featured Carlos White in an iconic photo with a butterfly resting on his head, and as a result, Insect Lore became a household name.

Remember Jurassic Park, The Ride at Universal Studios in Hollywood? Insect Lore got the call to create a 4,000-butterfly salute as a grand opening gesture.

In 1997, Insect Lore went global with the establishment of a sister company in the UK. Caterpillars are shipped to families, educators and butterfly lovers across the USA, the UK and the EU.

A year later, Insectlore.com was online as the company’s first website. From the web to out-of-this-world came a call from NASA in 1999. Insect Lore’s Painted Lady butterflies voyaged into space on the space Shuttle Columbia! Insect Lore partnered with NASA and classrooms across the USA to find out whether the caterpillars would undergo metamorphosis in zero gravity. Guess what? They did!

In 2002, Insect Lore took life cycle kits beyond butterflies with the creation of their exclusive ladybug-growing kit- Ladybug Land; as they grew the product line, Insect Lore introduced its iconic pop-up butterfly habitat, to provide customers with the ultimate butterfly-viewing experience! In 2003, the Butterfly Pavilion was named “Best Overall Butterfly-Raising Kit” by the Wall Street Journal.

On the cusp of its 50th anniversary, Insect Lore teamed up World of Eric Carle™ in 2018 for a perfect match. The award-winning butterfly company combined its revolutionary insect-raising kits with the iconic art of the Eric Carle™ brand. Through its partnership with World of Eric Carle™, Insect Lore brings one of the most successful publishing franchises of all time (founded also in 1969) into the fascinating world of live nature projects. Fans of The Very Hungry Caterpillar ™ & The Grouchy Ladybug ™ story books are delighted to see the real-life versions of their favorite characters grow and transform.

2019 marks Insect Lore’s 50th Anniversary of providing the wonder of metamorphosis to children, families and educators. Insect Lore’s educational kits have received the prestigious STEM Authenticated Trademark from STEM.org, as well as the Parent’s Choice Award, Academic’s Choice Award, The National Parenting Center Award, the Tillywig Award, the 2019 Brain Toy Award, the Hot Diggity Award, the Oppenheim Portfolio Best Toy Award, and the Mom’s Choice Awards.

Insect Lore ships hundreds of thousands of butterfly kits across the USA, the UK, and the EU annually. Its educational STEM kits and outdoor/nature products can be found in specialty stores across the country.

For 50 years Insect Lore has been providing families and classrooms with butterfly and ladybug growing kits as well as ant kits. Once their Painted Lady caterpillars transform into beautiful butterflies, children can feed and observe them for a few days, and then set them free to pollinate our world. It is Insect Lore’s hope that once children witness the incredible life cycle of a butterfly or ladybug, they will be inspired to become stewards of our precious environment.

2019 marks Insect Lore’s 50th Anniversary
of providing the wonder of metamorphosis!

Hasbro is already paying for Trump's threatened tariffs on Chinese toys~Donald Trump has only threatened to extend tariffs to virtually all Chinese goods, but Hasbro is already paying for the president's game of Risk. The toy giant stomached additional costs last quarter due to the "exhaustive amount of work" needed to prepare for the "very challenging and damaging impact" of tariffs if they're imposed, CEO Brian Goldner said on the second-quarter earnings call this week. The proposed import duties have "far-reaching implications" and would be "very disruptive to our...
Toys 'R' Us Is Back - Meet The $40 Million-Backed Startup That Made It Possible~The storied company announced that it will return to the US market in time for the holidays, with retail locations in Houston and Paramus, New Jersey. When its doors reopen this November, Geoffrey the Giraffe will still be there to greet customers but not much else will be the same. That’s because Tru Kids, the parent company that owns the Toys ‘R’ Us brand, has entered into a joint venture with B8ta, a San Francisco-based experiential retailer that has already helped reinvigorate the in-store...
Toys R Us is officially back from the dead, but its new stores won't actually make any money selling toys~Tru Kids, the company created in February that controls the Toys R Us and Babies R Us brands, is opening two new Toys R Us stores for the 2019 holiday season. Tru Kids announced on Wednesday that the two stores will be open in high-end malls: The Galleria in Houston, Texas and in Westfield Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey. The stores will be smaller than Toys R Us of years past, at roughly 6,500 square feet, with a "playground-like environment"...
Toys ‘R’ Us Targets 10 Stores by End of 2020 in Comeback Bid~The reincarnated version of Toys “R” Us is opening two stores this holiday season as a testing ground, with the hope of scaling up to 10 locations by the end of 2020. The company will open 6,500-square-foot stores at malls in Houston and Paramus, New Jersey, in a joint venture with retailer b8ta Inc. A key part of their strategy is to provide “Instagram-able” experiences to lure shoppers into the new locations, including photo ops with Geoffrey the Giraffe, birthday parties and other events, Tru Kids Brands CEO...
Barry and Raub Share New Details About Revamped TRU~Tru Kids Brands, the parent of the Toys “R” Us brand, and b8ta, the software-powered experiential retailer, announced that they have entered into a joint venture to bring Toys “R” Us stores back to the United States. The new store experience will deliver the hottest toy products and brands, carefully curated and showcased in highly immersive smaller-format interactive spaces. The new stores will be about 6,500 square feet, combining the hottest and newest toys with interactive experiences that will continually evolve...
Can The Toys'R'Us-b8ta Tie-in Work?~The big question is will it be enough to bring back one of the best-known retailing brands ever? While Tru Kids, which bought the intellectual properties of the bankrupt retailer, has talked about reopening, today’s announcement of new stores in the Galleria in Houston and Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, mark the first details on the planned revival of what was at one time the most important toy retailer on the planet. The twist that makes the new deal so fascinating is that these stores will be a joint venture with b8ta, which the company...
Toys 'R' Us Just Literally Came Back From the Dead. (Here's the Ridiculously Ironic Detail You Couldn't Make Up If You Tried)~This time around, Toys R Us isn't actually going to be making money, at least directly, on the toys sold within its stores. Instead, it's using the brand to sell space to other toy makers -- manufacturers, distributors, retailers, whatever you'd like to call them -- so that they can sell directly. They're teaming up with a four-year-old company called b8ta to make this part happen. It sounds a bit weird, like a cross between a giant department store model and some kind of 21st century, A.I.-enabled commerce platform. But, two points for using the whole "experiences not things" Millennial trope...
Toys R Us returns and its backers are ‘open to exporting the new model to Britain~The two mall-based stores are set to open in time for Christmas. Other locations for Toys R Us’ return have not yet been divulged, but backers have said that they will be in ‘prime, high traffic areas.’ Raub has said that up to eight more stores are planned for next year, with the aim of hitting a ‘sweet spot’ of around 10,000 square feet. The co-CEO has also stated that he open to exporting the new venture’s model to Britain, and Europe, though nothing is currently planned. “This is a very scalable model...
Toys R Us: Don't Call It a Comeback~About a decade ago, TRU had the opportunity to pivot its business into an interactive model that kept consumers visiting its stores. Had it been implemented, it may have kept shoppers from changing their habits when it came to buying toys. The company failed to do that largely because it had too much debt from a leveraged buyout to properly invest in revamping its stores. Now the chain -- or at least a successor company that owns its trademarks -- has plans for a comeback that includes new retail stores. It's not going to work in any...
Toys ‘R’ Us is making a comeback in the U.S., but maybe it shouldn’t~“Tru Kids has to re-establish a somewhat tarnished brand to a U.S. audience. And I personally don’t think it’s going to fly,” said The Toy Insider’s Zahn. After disappointing sales in holiday 2017, Toys “R” Us decided to shutter its 800 stores in June 2018. In August 2018, a court-approved settlement for creditors, including vendors, was reached so that they would receive 22 cents on the dollar. They were owed about $800 million. “There are thousands of families and friends from the 33,000 Toys ‘R’ Us...
This Is How Many Stores Close If JC Penney Goes Under~JCP has hired restructuring specialists as its path to financial viability narrows. JCP claims it sometimes taps “external advisors to evaluation opportunities.” Whichever claim is true, one thing is certain. Time is running out for J.C. Penney to avoid the fate of retailers such as Toys “R” Us and Sears. The future of hundreds of stores and tens of thousands of employees is at stake. J.C. Penney has about 860 stores in the United States and Puerto Rico. It employs approximately 95,000 people. Those stores and people are...

Elizabeth Warren launched a new attack on private equity: Here’s how the downfall of Toys R Us got her there~The debt load firms placed on retailers left them hamstrung. When digital commerce permanently altered the retail industry, the companies had no capacity to make investments in technology and in their stores that were needed to compete against Amazon. The result was a rash of bankruptcies, including those of Payless ShoeSource, Sports Authority and Toys R Us. Thousands lost their jobs. Toys R Us’ liquidation, which stripped away about 30,000 U.S. jobs and...

Modeling kids out of debt~Have you ever heard of the quote, “Train your children when they are young and they will never forget it for the rest of their lives?” Did you know that there are parents who unconsciously train their children to get into debt? We teach them by modeling. Our kids learn by our actions, and by what we say. That is why we have to be very intentional when it comes to teaching them about debt, we must practice what we teach. For kids, whenever they see a toy that they like from their friend, they have the tendency to borrow the toy. Harmless, right? But what we all...
How will Brexit impact UK retail in 2019?~Why things are looking bad for the UK’s Christmas supply chain. ParcelHero weighed in, predicting that warehouses will fill with Brexit stockpiled goods just as supplies of Christmas toys and electronics should be flooding in. It also flags up a potential sharp hike in the price of electronic goods and new charges on gifts from abroad. Either there is enough stock to get through a no-deal Brexit, or enough for a traditional Christmas– retailers can’t make space for both. Warehousing space is already down to just 2.2 percent. 20 percent is the...
Looking to replace Chinese imports, US turns to Indian product~The US is looking to replace Chinese exports with Indian products in at least seven product lines including vulcanised rubber, footwear and kitchen accessories. “Importers in the US have shown keen interest in our products in at least seven tariff lines,” said an official in the know of the details. “We have a five-six month period to make use of this opportunity before Vietnam and Cambodia fill in the space vacated by China.” India exported these items worth $1.5 billion in FY19 to the US, and the industry is keen to ramp up...

Online sales will reach $645 billion in 2020; but growth slowing~Online retail sales growth may have reached an inflection point. Online sales growth has slowed for four consecutive quarters for the first time since 2012 and may have reached an inflection point that could result in slowing growth moving forward. The Retail & Consumer Products practice at FTI expects U.S. online retail sales of $575 billion in 2019, a 12.3% increase over 2018. That compares to a 14.2% increase in 2018, when the market grew from $450 billion and topped $500 billion for the first time, and a 15.6%...

When it comes to school supplies, 57% responded similarly. Back-to-school spending to fall from last year~Back-to-school spending is set to rise per household but fall overall as the number of students in school and college declines. Total spending for K-12 schools and college combined is projected to reach $80.7 billion, down from last year’s $82.8 billion largely because of the decreased number of households with children in elementary through high school. The survey found that families with children in elementary school through high school plan to spend an average $696.70. That’s up from $684.79 last year and tops the previous record...

After six straight weekends with numbers below those of the record-holding 2018, the box office for the top 12 was up 54% from the same frame last year, and 2019’s running deficit with 2018 was reduced from about 9% to 7%...

Millennials Are Obsessed With Children’s Toys And Movies – And Its Hurting Kids~The current generation is so unwilling to let go of what they loved during their childhood that they may be inadvertently damaging the generation that will follow them. Have you taken a look at what movies are showing in your local cinema lately? Aladdin, Toy Story, The Lion King. Anyone would think we have been transported back to the 1990s. Society is currently on quite the nostalgia kick as of late and it goes well beyond just Hollywood. Video games and toys are guilty of relying on remakes and...

Voiced by Ryan Reynolds , Detective Pikachu is an adorable and warm-hearted partner to the film's protagonist, and the perfect character to be transformed into a cuddly toy. However, some fans who've ordered the Detective Pikachu plushie have received more than they bargained for. Far from being cute, the toys are instead the stuff of nightmares...
The Story Behind The Rarest Star Wars Action Figure~Vlix Oncard is the rarest action figure ever commercially released. That’s the sort of thing one learns when doing a deep dive into the research required when starting production on my series, The Toys That Made Us. I know—I can hear some of you out there yelling, “No, rocket-firing Boba Fett is the rarest action figure ever produced!” Well, the major caveat here is the words “commercially released.” Poor spring-loaded Boba never made it to the store shelves, but Vlix actually did. How did he manage that? And also, who...

Best product flops and missteps from history: How many of these blunders do you remember?~There have been plenty of tech failures over the years with various different launches of products resulting in utter failure, disaster or just a complete lack of interest. Some of these products were simply launched before their time, others were poorly thought out and proved unpopular at launch. Other products seemed to do ok at first, but then needed to be recalled due to safety problems. We're summing up the best (or is it worst) from over the years. Which of these classics do you...
Japanese drink vending machine capsule toys: A must-have for recreating Japan in miniature~Japan has a well-deserved reputation as the world’s most enthusiastic country when it comes to vending machines. It seems like you can find a machine selling drinks on just about every block, and you won’t have to walk much farther to find a gachapon or other brand of capsule toy vending machine either. So perhaps it was inevitable that novelty good maker J Dream was going to combine the two. The company’s newest capsule toy offering is called the Miniature Vending Machine...

How HEYBOT! Broke All The Rules Of Shows Designed To Sell You Toys~There's something vaguely dishonest about kids cartoons designed to sell toys. It's not that these shows can't be good but they always exist within the same specific framework: Advances happen not because they make sense from a character or narrative perspective, but because the merchandising department demands it. Sure, the Super Mega Robot turning into the Super Mega BLASTER Robot might have helped push the plot along, but it also helps to push more Super Mega Blaster Robot toys off the shelf...
